What to Pack for October Half Term at Adventure Camps

A well-packed bag can make October half term feel much easier for both you and your child. We welcome children aged 3, 16 to our inclusive holiday camps, and having the right kit helps them focus on joining in, making friends and trying something new.

October weather can change quickly, from chilly morning drop-offs to milder afternoons and rainy outdoor play. Whether your child is attending one of our half-term camps in Leeds, York or Yarm, this simple guide will help you prepare. Please always read your booking confirmation too, as some locations or programmes may have their own instructions.

Choose Comfortable Layers for Active Days

Our days can include energetic games, creative activities and time outdoors, so comfortable clothing is the best starting point. Choose pieces your child can run, sit, stretch and play in without worrying about keeping them spotless.

Leggings, joggers, T-shirts, long-sleeved tops and sweatshirts are all practical choices. For younger children, clothing that is easy to pull on and off independently can make toilet trips and changing time less stressful.

Layers are especially useful during October half term. A T-shirt under a fleece or sweatshirt gives your child options if they get warm while playing, then cool down later. A lightweight waterproof coat with a hood is a sensible addition, even if the morning starts dry.

A weather-ready outfit may include:

  • A T-shirt or long-sleeved top
  • A warm sweatshirt, jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable joggers, leggings or shorts
  • A waterproof coat with a hood
  • A spare pair of socks for damp days

For footwear, trainers with secure fastenings are usually a great choice for busy camp days. Pick shoes your child has worn before and feels comfortable in, rather than brand-new footwear that could rub. Open-toed shoes, loose sandals and shoes that easily slip off are best left at home.

Pack a Bag Your Child Can Manage

A small backpack is usually easier for children to carry and recognise than a large bag. It needs enough room for a coat, drink, lunch if required and spare clothing, but it should not be so heavy that your child struggles with it.

Separate pockets can be helpful. They give you somewhere to keep a wet coat or spare socks away from snacks and dry clothes. If your child is new to camp, letting them help choose or pack their bag can also give them a little more confidence on the first morning.

Please label everything that goes into the bag. Coats, jumpers, water bottles, lunch boxes and backpacks can look very similar when lots of children arrive ready for a day of fun. A clear name label gives us a much better chance of reuniting an item with its owner.

Useful bag items include:

  • A labelled reusable water bottle
  • A packed lunch and snacks, where required
  • Spare underwear and socks
  • A small carrier bag for wet or muddy items
  • A clearly labelled coat or waterproof layer

If you are sending food, choose containers and packets your child can open independently where possible. This can be particularly helpful for younger campers, who may not yet be confident with tight lids or fiddly wrappers.

Remember Food, Comfort and Care Needs

Active days can leave children hungry, so a filling lunch and easy-to-eat snacks can be helpful when food is needed. Check your booking confirmation for the latest arrangements before packing, including any food provision, allergy guidance or location details.

If your child has dietary requirements, please tell us in advance rather than relying on a note inside their lunch bag. This helps our team prepare properly and makes the day run more smoothly.

Some children feel completely at home on day one, while others need a little time to settle. A small comfort item may help a first-time camper feel reassured. This could be a familiar keyring, a small photo or another approved item that fits safely inside their bag. It is best not to send treasured toys, expensive items or anything that would cause upset if misplaced.

Care information matters just as much as clothing. Before your child’s first session, make sure we have current emergency contact details, relevant medical information and any required paperwork. If they need medication, an inhaler, allergy treatment or additional support, speak with us in advance and follow our current arrangements for bringing and labelling these items.

Match Their Kit to Their Chosen Programme

The best packing list can vary slightly depending on what your child is doing. Our multi-activity and specialist programmes may have different clothing, equipment or arrival instructions, so your booking information is always the best place to start.

A few days before camp, take a moment to check the forecast, session times and venue details. If rain is likely, an extra warm layer, waterproof trousers or a second set of clothes may be useful. For a dry but cold day, cosy socks and a fleece may be all they need.

Technology and valuables can create extra worries during a busy day. Unless your programme information says otherwise, we recommend leaving expensive devices, jewellery and sentimental belongings at home. A simple kit that is clearly labelled gives children what they need without adding distractions.

Pack the Night Before for a Calmer Morning

Packing the evening before can make the first camp morning feel much more relaxed. Lay out comfortable layers, put the waterproof coat by the door and fill the water bottle when you are ready to leave. A quick check of your confirmation can help you spot any programme-specific item before the rush begins.

A labelled bag, trainers, spare clothes, food if required and any agreed care items are usually enough to set your child up for the day. With a practical bag ready to go, they can arrive feeling comfortable, prepared and excited to get involved.
