The Performing Arts Zone is where campers step into the spotlight — whether they’re acting, dancing, speaking, or simply trying something new. It’s all about building confidence, expressive communication, and joy through movement, voice, and imagination. The goal is not perfection, but participation, collaboration, and discovery.
Purpose #
To empower children through creative self-expression, storytelling, and confidence-building games. This zone creates space for playfulness, courage, and communication without pressure to ‘perform’ in a formal sense.
Delivery by Age Group #
Explorers (Ages 5–7)
- Use playful drama games with big movements and simple prompts.
- Activities should be energetic and imaginative, with clear start and stop points.
- Repetition and rhythm help with participation and memory.
Adventurers (Ages 8–13)
- Introduce improv games, short skits, and structured challenges (e.g. “act it out”, “commercials”).
- Use prompts or character cards to support creativity and reduce performance anxiety.
- Allow for breakout groups, leadership roles, and group-devised pieces.
Sample Sessions & Structure #
A powerful PA session builds comfort and confidence. Suggested flow: Warm-Up → Game/Focus → Creative Challenge → Share-Out
Sample Sessions:
- Emotion Freeze Frames (Express a feeling on a 3-count)
- Mirror & Mime (Partner warm-up followed by silent acting)
- Character Carousel (Act like an animal, celebrity, or superhero)
- Perform-A-Product (Create a silly advert with jingle!)
- Group Skit Challenge (Using 3 props and a random setting)
Kit Checklist #
- Props box (hats, scarves, toys, costume bits)
- Prompt cards (characters, settings, objects)
- Bluetooth speaker and playlist (instrumentals, upbeat music)
- Paper and pens for script writing
- Wipeboard or A-frame for structure & group names
Staff Roles & Setup #
- 1 Lead Facilitator: high energy, expressive, able to model participation with joy
- 1 Support: manages group dynamics, helps with props, and supports nervous participants
- Space should be cleared for movement, with soft edges and a defined performance area
- Use music and visuals to set atmosphere (e.g. themed background sound or spotlight moment)
Behaviour & Inclusion #
- Make participation opt-in without pressure to speak in front of group
- Use buddy systems for nervous performers or allow non-verbal roles (e.g. director, sound effects)
- Celebrate effort, humour, and creativity – not just “stage presence”
Reflection & Celebration Prompts #
- What did you try today that felt new?
- How did your group work together?
- What character would you love to play next?
- What’s your PA superpower — acting, sound, ideas, or teamwork?
Theming & Wow Factor Ideas #
- Mini Talent Show Friday – hosted by campers
- Mystery Prop Box Challenge
- Create-a-Camp Anthem (campers write and perform)
- Red Carpet Runway (improv characters strut & pose)
